In the near future the arms factory Oerlikon-Bührle will be redeveloped as a commercial centre and new residential area, thus opening up a 13 acres piece of land. How do you integrate this new neighbourhood into the existing public fabric? Planning and Building a new neighbourhood will take many years and in reality the area will remain closed to the public for this period still. In this project, a first plot is freed up for development, where the Portal, the future lighthouse of the neighbourhood, will stand, as a first access point to the new area.

The Bührle Portier provides the neighbourhood with a space for concerts, art exhibitions, commercial activity, restaurants, bars, small office spaces, and parking. It is also, as the name says a “Portier” for the residents, where they can pick up parcels, leave keys, and advertise projects or community events. The filigran concrete and steel construction carries protruding rooms, such as the restaurant and the concert hall, and makes them visible from far away, as if they were advertising billboards. Parking spots are available on all levels, but can be converted into small exhibition spaces or market halls.
