The deindustrialization of our cities leaves behind empty spaces, sometimes whole neighbourhoods. In this project the former arms factory Oerlikon-Bührle, in the outskirts of Zurich’s agglomeration, is transformed into a new neighbourhood. Up until now the area was sealed off to the general public, thus, not part of local resident’s mental map of the area. But still, the factory with its many buildings, dating from different times, carries a story that is very much connected with Oerlikon’s development. In order to not completely rid the place’s history, the new buildings follow the existing footprints and in some cases old buildings find new tenants.
The new cinema Scope is, next to a porn cinema, the only cinema in the area and shall be the new meeting point for youngsters and lone cinema goers alike. The building stages many different cinema experiences; blockbuster cinema, art-house movies, a lunch cinema, and an outdoor cinema. With its many entries and intertwined public spaces it defies the isolation of a cinema.
